The Delorean, a car made famous from the "Back to the Future" movies in the 1980s, is going back in production. The DeLorean Motor Co. is resurrecting the past with plans to build some replica models of the famed car .
The original automaker was formed in 1975 by John DeLorean. The company went bankrupt in 1982 despite an attempt by DeLorean to save it with money from drug trafficking.
The DeLorean Motor Co., not related to the original manufacturer, bought up the car's parts and engineering plans during the 1990s. Since then, the new company has been using those parts to recondition the collector-owned cars, and has also been selling used DeLoreans for between $65,000 to $70,000.
The only significant DeLorean part that's going to be new is the V6 engine, which is great news for buyers. The original engines only have 130 horsepower, while the new V6's will have between 350 to 400 horsepower.
Stephen Wynne, CEO of DeLorean Motors, says the company plans to build about 300 cars, hoping to retail them at $100,000.
So, if you've been dreaming since 1985 to own a DeLorean, now's your chance. A perfectly practical family car, well worth the family savings.
